EVOLVE

An artist residency housed within an old abandoned church in Oberon, NSW. The brief required lodgings for three users, plus studio space. The concept, derived from an organism, utilises the compact floor area by combining all ground floor amenities as one unit. The grouping appears as if it has contracted and expanded, enlarged until it can no more, like a living organism that has reached maturity.

EXTERIOR

The organism expands further, pushing past its shell, and out into free space. The organism provides shelter in the form of a small studio.

GROUND FLOOR

GROUND FLOOR

Ground floor accommodates the artists gathering zones in the form of a singular unit. A circular lounge makes use of the compact floor area and provides a meeting space adequate for a studio discussion, or to meet with friends. The remaining unit melds into the circular lounge, and at once houses a kitchen, a laundry beneath the horizontal surface, and dining space for two.

A spiral staircase emerges from the gathering spaces, and winds its way up to level one.

All horizontal surfaces reach the same height, highlighting the continuity throughout the space.

LEVEL ONE

LEVEL ONE

Level one houses sleeping quarters for three.

The quarters do not touch the exterior walls, so as to conserve the natural light, and create a sense of height on both ground and level one. A trio of bunk lodgings offer places to rest, and store belongings. A space to bathe when you wake is provided.
